The world’s forestry is facing increasingly stringent requirements for sustainability and traceability. OTMETKA has therefore developed a groundbreaking solution for marking timber.
– The system digitizes timber flows down to each individual log throughout the entire value chain and also ensures that forestry complies with the EU Deforestation Regulation, says Bengt Sörvik, CEO and founder.
Despite the fact that digitalization is used in many parts of the forestry industry, a crucial link has been missing: a solution for tracking timber throughout the entire value chain – from forest to end product. Bengt Sörvik says that OTMETKA will soon begin testing for individual marking of timber, which guarantees digital traceability during mechanized harvesting on a global level.
– The information tied to each unique code is extensive and includes everything from supplier information and log dimensions to the tree’s exact GPS position and harvesting time, which creates a transparent and fully traceable process with a high level of security for the customer, he says.
Facilitates timber logistics
OTMETKA’s system has attracted interest among Swedish forestry companies and also internationally, for example in Chile, South Africa and the USA. The company is also a key player in the EU project Sintetic, which is developing a unified data management system for forestry.
Some of the investors, Ulf Eriksson and Bengt Bjurbäck, also principals of a group of professional experienced timber suppliers, emphasize that the system optimizes sawing yield and can also prevent illegal timber trade:
– For example, by combining individual marking of timber with X-ray technology at the measuring station, where the X-ray image is linked to the OTMETKA code, new opportunities are created for the sawmill industry. The image can also be used to calculate the timber value. All of this has great economic potential and simplifies the entire timber logistics.
Prevents financial crime
New investor Patrik Larsson, partner in Virkeslogistik Mellansverige AB, with a focus on truck transport of timber and one of the industry leaders in forest logistics, also sees great advantages in the digitalization of timber:
